Overview
The woods of San Giorgio Maggiore Island are an architectural delight with ten chapels, created by international designers, scattered throughout its grounds.
Architects from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Great Britain, USA, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Chile, Serbia and Paraguay each created a building for the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. They based their work on Gunnar Asplund’s _Woodland Chapel_ built for the Skogskyrkogården cemetery in Stockholm in 1920, and the results were the Vatican Chapels.
As you walk through the small forest, plug into your your audio guide and enjoy an original soundtrack composed by Antonio Fresa and performed by the Teatro La Fenice Orchestra.
