Overview
Begin your day at London's Kings Cross Station and board a train to York. Gaze out the window as you pass through the calming English countryside with its rolling hills and bucolic landscapes.
Upon arrival in York meet your local driver-guide to start your small group tour to The North York Moors.
Taking a short drive out of the city we will shortly arrive at one of Yorkshire’s finest ruins, Byland Abbey. Built in the 12th century, it is one of the most impressive monastic ruins in the county and tells the tale of the impact the dissolution of the monasteries during the reign of Henry VII had on the communities of people who relied on the religious buildings. The ruins that remain today are all that is left of the once thriving and rich monastery that once stood proudly here.
From Byland we head through the ancient forests surrounding Wass and climb up Wass Bank and onward to the famous old market town of Helmsley, meaning “Helms” Flowery Meadow. Helmsley has been an important settlement for at least 1500 years. It makes the perfect place to get some refreshments from the many local shops and bakeries the town boasts. Your driver will not mind if you enjoy a nice slice cake on board whilst taking in the scenery.
After leaving Helmsley we will start to ascend higher into the North York Moors National Park. Your guide will explain the region's place in history from the religious upheavals to the importance of farming to the area. Discover the rich mining heritage and the important role the area played during the industrial revolution.
A chance to get truly off the beaten track, venturing down country lanes, through deep cut glacial valleys and up high over the brooding windswept heather moorland that covers a third of this breath-taking landscape. You’ll see why the area has been an inspiration to so many authors and artists over the centuries.
Before long we will arrive in “Heartbeat Country”, taken from the popular TV show Heartbeat and into “Aidensfield” itself. Goathland is the real name of the charming village that was the setting for the classic show set in the 1960’s. You will get a chance for a photo in the village before proceeding to the very quaint old railway station the once doubled as “Hogsmeade” Station in the Harry Potter films.
Here you will take a nostalgic train ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to the popular seaside town of Whitby.
Please note Steam Train can be swapped with a heritage diesel under certain conditions (e.g. Hot weather or breakdowns), entirely in the hands of the NYMR.
Arriving in Whitby, your guide will meet you and be able to give suggestions on where to go. You’ll have free time to explore this beautiful harbour town and maybe you'll choose to try some Fish and Chips, a delicacy famous in the town. Or maybe you'll discover the history of Captain Cook who set sail from Whitby on the Bark Endeavor to discover Australia. There is also the glorious Whitby Abbey which stands above the town and which famously inspired Bram Stoker, the author of Dracular.
After you have enjoyed the town, you will be met by your driver-guide and then make your way back to York.
